A New Church Being Built in Koghb

2011-04-16

The Church St. Gregory the Illuminator (Grigor Lusavorich) will be built on the ruins of the chapel ‘’Vardapeti Khech’’ in the South-Eastern part of the village.

Koghb residents have been looking forward to the building of the church, there being no other church in the village. Due to his love for the native village Samson Veran Abovyan, currently living in Moscow, initiated the construction of the church.

The area of the church is now being    under the immediate control of the benefactor. The church has been designed by Alexander Danielyan and Erik Hovhannisyan.

Explanation

St. Gregory the Illuminator (Grigor Lusavorich) is more like a chapel by its size, but it includes elements making it possible to carry out certain important church rituals (baptism, marriage, etc.). Its structure consists of two basic volumes - the church porch and the hall. There is an open air vestibule in the first volume, on the upper part of which is the hall for singers. The steeple is above the latter. The hall, together with the baptism place, altar and holy table, is in the second volume. The depository house is under the altar with a separate entrance from outside. The entrance to the chapel was complicated because of the relief of the location. To solve this problem a wide exit platform will be built. From the Northern part the location will be surrounded with a breast-wall, there will also be an inbuilt vestry for candle lighting. Of great importance is the  snow-ball tree, which has been existing for a long time and has a great spiritual significance.
